Mrluca is a great Jazz band that plays jazz music for children. Their music will soon be accompanied by a childrens book. This is one of the illustrations I did for the book.

Childrens book concept illustration
I'm trying to find the right look for a story written by Tjibbe Veldkamp. I do like the looseness of the sketchlines still in this final illustration.

Fairytales finished

I did it!! I finished all of the illustyrations for the two fairytale books, and made the deadline! To celebrate I'll share two more finished illustrations for the story: Hansl and Gretl. Although I had little time to do extensive sketching and researching, I tried to spend as much time as possible to create a good foundation for the illustration.

Red riding hood

Development of an illustration from start to finish. The tight deadline doesn't allow me to do a lot of sketching. Still the 'design' stage is very important to me, so I try to put as much effort into it as possible. Then I solve a lot of problems while actually painting the illustration. The foliage on top is meant for typography.

Fairytales...
This is a finished illustration for the fairytale book I'm working on. I'm pleased with the result, especially considering I have only one day for each illustration. This Illustration is for the fairytale: 'The story of a boy who went forth to learn fear.' In this scene, he spends the night in a castle, Not afraid at all of the monsters and ghosts there. Instead, he falls asleep...Typography for the stories will be placed into the illustrations, which explains the big black area at the left side of the illustration.

Alice in Wonderland
Exploring style and technique for illustrating the adventures of Alice in Wonderland. The illustration could use a better storytelling concept, but gives me a good idea of the mood and illustration style I am looking for.
This sketch depicts the scene where Alice finds the key on the glass table, which opens the small door. This is very much the style and feel I am looking for...

Bangerang #3 Final illustration
This is how the illustration eventually turned out. I think it captiures the atmosphere and fantasy feel of the story.

Bangerang! #2
The previous sketch for the Peter Pan book cover was rejected. I agree with the publishers comment that that design was too much about Captain Hook, and not as much about Peter Pan. These new concept sketches for the cover were approved. Let's paint!

Vincent van Gogh character

I am designing a character based on Vincent van Gogh for a children's book. I created a rough model in Zbrush to get a 'feel' of the 3 dimensionality of the head. The character is in development. I am drawing different expressions and gestures, to 'get to know' the character , so I can decide what should be altered and what works.

Terrible yellow eyes

Terrible yellow eyes is a project initiated by Corey godbey.
The blog contains a collection of works inspired by the beloved classic, Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak, created by many talented artists from around the world.
All of them share a love and admiration for Sendak's work and the pieces presented here are done as a tribute to his life and legacy.

Sketch

I am working on a new book. I am exploring new directions for children's book illustrations, experimenting with distortions and perspectives. I work on this project in my spare hours, that I don't have much... progress will be slow, but it gives me the opportunity to put in some extras, that ofthen cannot be added because of deadlines, budgets or other restrictions....

Book cover sketches

Two different approaches for a book cover. I had a lot of fun exploring these possibilities although eventually the whole project was dismissed...
