HP de Tijd cover illustration

It may be interesting to show the process of making a copver illustration. I had a short deadline, so I divided my time in three parts:

1.Thumbnailing
2.Sketching
3. Painting the illustration.

The thumbnails above show different concepts for the illustration. The subject of the story was: These days many parents with young children divorce, but they both do the upbringing of their child (with their new partner) Some of the concepts are from the viewpoint of the child, some from the viewpoint of the parent... The thumbnails are a way of brainstorming, and trying to tackle the subject from different angles.
The art director decides which one he thinks best fits the cover. some of the other thumbnails will turn into small illustrations to accompany the article.
Final illustration. You can see some choices were made after the sketch; for instance to use straight lines and pointy corners in the man's home, and curves and ornaments in the woman's home, to bring up the contrast between them.
Final cover.
One of the small illustrations to accompany the article inside the magazine.
