Skullduggery Pleasant

This is an illustration for Skullduggery Pleasant. A novel by Derek Landy, about the adventures of a 12-year-old girl who is heir to a mysterious fortune and her fully articulated skeleton mentor.

Noor and her runaway parents

Noor and her runaway parents, that's the translated title of a dutch book I've been doing illustrations for. It was a lot of fun, making illustrations about a girl whose parents instantly left one day, leaving a small note and some money.
It was a challenge to use only black, white and grey, and create different layers with these elements.

Krukel #3

These are illustrations I did for the third part of the 'Krukel' books. ( published in English with the title: " Urchin of the riding stars" -with other cover illustrations -. The script has been sold to Miramax, so maybe there will be a film of the book) The illustrations are for the Dutch publication of the book.
I wanted to capture an adventurous atmosphere, of squirrels sneeking out in the dead of the night, and others exploring caves underground.
The third picture is an illustration for the back of the book, so text will be put over the clouds.
The last picture is just an idea of what the layout will be.

Santana

Here's a sketch of Santana. I want to do a painting of it, maybe in oils. I hope I can find the time, since I am really busy doing children's book illustrations and book covers. I'll post them later on.

Mata Hari

This is a book cover for a book about Mata Haris daughter. I wanted to create an early 20th century feel, using art nouveau elements. Also I wanted it to have an adventurous look, so I created a collage in the tradition of Drew Struzans movieposters. The result became a bit slick, but good for its purpose.

Artoonator

This is a caricature of my good friend and colleague artist, the Artoonator. Check out his work:

    Arendsoog

I have the honour of doing new book covers for the "Arendsoog"-series. (Arendsoog = eagle eye) These books were published in the sixties and seventies in holland and are considered classics.
I wanted to give the books a traditional 'look', so I used some old-school painting effects. For example the red background, heavy outlines and leaving the shadows open. I also wanted it to look like a movie poster. So I used some collage effects, in the tradition of Drew Struzan ( www.drewstruzan.com )
The books will be published at Pimentokinderboeken. ( www.pimentokinderboeken.nl )

Below are the original book covers...
