Reader's Digest

This is an illustration I did for Reader's Digest. It is about the power of Google. The first sketch was rejected, since it was considered too grim. So I came up with the second sketch, which depicts google as dtectives instead of an evil puppeteer. The illustration was done in ink, and colored digitally.

Life drawing

These life dawings I made at the sessions arranged by Arne.
The male model was very expressive. He is a dance student, and his poses were very challenging.
My father also joined some of the sessions. Check out his drawings here
and the drawings of Arne here

Tijn

This is a sketch of my son Tijn, three months old now. He is the joy of my life, the most beautiful thing that has ever happened to me.

Rejected...

This illustration is about someone coaching an unemployed person. He's is rowing in his paper resume boat, and the coach is giving him directions.
Unfortunately the illustration was rejected in the end. On second thought they found the illustration too negative.
Too bad, although I personally am very glad I got to finish the sketch. I learned some more about textures and digital illustration...

penciltests

My first steps in animation.
I finally puchased animation software, so I can experiment and find out what this medium is about. It is really fascinating studying movement, timing, squash and stretch.
Having good fundamentals in understanding shapes, 3 dimensionality and basiscs of anatomy is essential to make a character move convincingly.

More sketchbook drawings

This is the first time I am experimenting with brush and ink. Most of my illustrations are painted, so I never got to explore the possibilities of brush and ink. I love the medium and it gives me a lot of new ideas. The ink illustrations above are some exercises to get to know the medium.

technique study

I am still deciding wether I'll use gouache or acrylics for the illustrations in my next book.
Since the story has a lot of different moods and different types of weather I may go for acrylics, which makes the flow of the paint, and looseness a lot easier.
Here's a quick sketch I made, trying to find an answer...

Book cover

This is a book that just came out.
The illustration is about the three most prominent writers of the Netherlands: Gerard Reve, Harry Mulisch and Willem Frederik Hermans, fighting over the prize for best writer, a golden Apple.
The illustration was done in gouache.
